About this converter
Skip the import wizard
Opening a CSV in Excel means arguing with the text import wizard about separators and encodings, and often watching leading zeros vanish and dates change format. A proper .xlsx file carries that information itself, so it opens the way it should the first time.
What the workbook contains
One sheet named after the file, a frozen and bold header row, columns sized to their contents, and numbers stored as numbers so they can be summed straight away. Text that only looks numeric, such as a postcode or a product code with leading zeros, is kept as text.
CSV to XLSX: common questions
Which separators are supported?
Comma, semicolon and tab, detected from the file. Semicolon files exported by European versions of Excel are handled correctly.
Will accented characters survive?
Yes. The workbook is written as UTF-8 throughout, which avoids the mojibake you get when Excel guesses the encoding of a plain CSV.
Can I convert several CSVs into one workbook?
Each file becomes its own workbook. To combine them into one workbook with several sheets, convert them and then copy the sheets together in Excel.
Does it work with Google Sheets and Numbers?
Yes. The .xlsx format is read by Google Sheets, Apple Numbers and LibreOffice Calc as well as Excel itself.
