About this converter

Transparency without the weight

PNG is the usual home for anything with a transparent background, and it is heavy. WebP supports alpha too and compresses it far better, so an interface icon set or a page of product cutouts can shrink dramatically while looking identical.

Where the savings are largest

Screenshots, illustrations and flat graphics with large areas of one colour compress extremely well. Photographs saved as PNG show the biggest absolute drop of all, often 70 percent or more, because they should never have been PNG in the first place.

PNG to WEBP: common questions

Is transparency preserved?

Yes, including partial transparency such as soft shadows and anti aliased edges.

Is WebP lossless here?

This tool writes lossy WebP at 90 percent quality, which is visually clean and much smaller. For pixel exact output, such as a screenshot destined for documentation, keep the PNG.

Can I use WebP in email?

Email clients are far behind browsers on image formats, so PNG or JPG remains the safe choice for newsletters. WebP is for the web.

How much smaller will my files be?

It depends entirely on the image. The result card shows the exact saving per file, so you can decide file by file.
